Hi, Reader, Have you been thinking about making a change or starting a new chapter doing something you’ve not done before and then felt a wave of doubt wash over you? I’m writing to you from literally that moment. I’m in the midst of making significant changes in my business and how I work. There are new things I’m going to be doing. New ways I want to work and bring together everything I’ve done and learned over my career as an investor, entrepreneur, speaker, author, and artist. I’m really excited about it all. And I also catch myself in moments of doubt. Can I really do this?!? Do I know how to do this? I guide so many of my clients through exactly these moments as they create their next chapters. And I realized that I was experiencing something I talk to them about all the time: Expertise Amnesia. Expertise Amnesia is what happens when you’ve developed your expertise in one context and then, when you step into a new one, you somehow feel like all that expertise stayed behind. You feel like a beginner. Like you’re starting from scratch. But your expertise doesn’t belong to your old job, role, company or business. It belongs to you. You bring it with you to whatever you do next. And this has been such a grounding reminder for me right now. I’m not starting from scratch. I have this incredibly rich palette I’ve developed over my lifetime and career. Every company I’ve built. Every mistake I’ve made. Every person I’ve led. Every book I’ve written, talk I’ve given, client I’ve worked with, painting I’ve made. All of it is source material for what I create next. Of course there are new things I need to learn. That’s always part of creating something new. And I have my moments of doubt, because doubt is a normal human response to doing something we’ve not done before. But when I remind myself of everything that is already on my palette, I feel grounded in what I know and what I bring with me. So if you’re standing on the threshold of change, I want to remind you: You are not starting from scratch. ✨ Your DARE this week:Take 10 minutes to reflect: What’s on my palette? What experiences, expertise, lessons, judgment, and natural gifts are you bringing with you into whatever you create next? 🎧 On the Dare Yourself Podcast this weekI talk about how Expertise Amnesia can affect how you talk about your work, what you charge, and what you believe you’re ready to do… …and how to reconnect with the expertise you already have. Walk With Me: The Expertise Amnesia That Makes You Feel Like a Beginner Warmly, P.S. Later this fall, I’ll be leading my next cohort of Create Your Next, my 5-month small-group mentorship for accomplished professionals who are ready to create their next era of work and life. If you’re serious about creating your next chapter and would like to learn more, reply to this email and let me know. I’ll share more with you. |

Hi, Reader, Welcome to this week's Dare Yourself email: one idea I'm thinking about and one Dare to put it into practice. 💡 The idea on my mind this week Think about a chapter of your life that was really challenging. The layoff. The relationship that ended. The business that didn't work out. The years you spent taking care of everyone but yourself. You've probably told the story of that chapter the same way for years: as something you went through, survived, even grew from. I know this...
Hi, Reader, I saw a reel the other day that I keep thinking about. I don't even remember who posted it. I never finished watching because I got stuck on the question they opened with: "How do you know when you've made it?" It's everywhere, isn't it? This idea that there's a point out there, somewhere ahead of us, where we arrive. Where we've made it. Where we can finally exhale and feel satisfied with ourselves and our lives. We even have the "metrics" for it. A certain amount of money. A...
Hi, Reader, Do you ever have this feeling like you’re waiting to arrive at some steady and settled place in your life? I’ve been feeling this. Over the past two years I’ve reinvented almost every aspect of my work, my business, and in many ways, myself. After spending a decade speaking and teaching and writing about happiness and emotional fitness, I shifted my focus to helping people use change as their catalyst to grow, to do more of what energizes them, and become who they are meant to be....
